The show begins with a thorough rundown of this extraordinary spectacle. Then, David is joined by the National Sales Manager of Troon Vineyards, Nate Winters, to talk about his company’s transition to Biodynamic farming and grape growing… A very interesting chapter in this well-established winery’s evolution.

Then, Trium Winery co-owner, Tony Corallo, shares what it's like to win the Best of Show at the Oregon Wine Experience with a varietal that one would simply not expect to win this top honor. Stranger things can happen! All this and more on Grape Encounters Radio, sponsored by David’s preferred source for all things wine, Total Wine and More.

And it’s not all about Oregon, because this is the beginning of harvest across the country, and if you can’t make it to Oregon, it’s likely that the wine country closest to you will also be sharing in the celebrations that herald the most important time of year in the world of wine. As Charles Dickens famously wrote at the beginning of A Tale of Two Cities, “It was the best of times and it was the worst of times.” While we never like to focus on any bad news when it comes to wine, there is a lot of attention being focused on the effects of climate change on the wine industry. It's not just something that is being anticipated. The rising temperatures are already forcing forward-thinking producers to come up with a strategy to protect the Golden State's most prestigious agricultural product. When it comes to issues like this, there’s no better person to turn to than Allison Jordan, a frequent guest on Grape Encounters who holds two very important titles. Allison is both the Vice President, Environmental Affairs at the Wine Institute in California and also the Executive Director of the California Sustainable Winegrowing Alliance.

Allison Jordan

Allison speaks often about the complex topic of global warming’s impact on wine production, and on this episode of Grape Encounters, she gives a very thorough rundown of what’s happening, what we can expect and how winemakers in California and beyond are thoughtfully addressing the issue with proactive measures.

But, in the interest of not being a Debbie downer, David dedicates half the show to perhaps the very best thing that happens in California each year: California Wine Month. This is a time when wine enthusiasts flock to the many wine regions of the California to join in on an almost limitless number of celebrations that feature any wine related activity you can possibly imagine. From statewide grape stomps to culinary extravaganzas and red carpet rolled out at countless wineries, September will see hundreds of thousands of visitors flock to wine countries stretching from one end of the state to the other in search of the ultimate good time and also some great educational opportunities as well. And it’s not all about California, because this is the beginning of harvest across the country, and if you can’t make it to California, it’s likely that the wine country closest to you will also be sharing in the celebrations that herald the most important time of year in the world of wine. On today’s show, David connects with Stuart Spencer, COO of Wines That Rock. We’re all familiar with the multitude of wine bottles with catchy labels on them hoping to capture our attention. Too often however, what’s in the bottle has little in common with the image that was used to sell it.

Wines That Rock do things differently. They are very obsessed with the creation of wines that commemorate pop culture; music, TV, movies and more. Using what seems to be pretty sound reasoning, the book and the cover are created to be in harmony.

The company has had enormous success with wine bearing album artwork from legendary acts like the Rolling Stones, Grateful Dead, The Police and even Pink Floyd. Now, they have taken on their most ambitious challenge to date… to create a Star Trek wine that will coincide with the the CBS release of the latest Star Trek installment, Picard.

Stuart has been a big-time player in the wine business for many, many years… and his knowledge is only overshadowed by his wit and humor! He’s got his fingers in every aspect of this project, so be sure to Kling-on to his every word!

Tom Rodrigues, winemaker and artist

David hosts Tom Rodrigues, winemaker and renowned artist, founder of Artevino wines and Maple Creek Winery. Maple Creek Ranch and Winery was established in the spring of 2001. Tom, an artist for more than four decades, decided to leave his hectic Marin County life and settle in the Yorkville Highlands of Anderson Valley, the premier growing region for Pinot Noir and Chardonnay. After finding the ideal environment for growing grapes and living a healthy lifestyle, he purchased the ranch, vineyard and winery. From there, he hired Kerry Damskey, a consulting winemaker, to mentor him in his winemaking techniques, making French style wine while using California fruit. Artevino was born.
Tom’s art adorns the labels of Artevino with a different painting on each varietal from his”Vineyard Series.” His art may also be seen on some of the most notable industry, Far Niente, Nickel and Nickel, Dolce, EnRoute, Gemstone and Manzanita Creek, just to name a few.

The sponsorship extends through the end of the year and gives us the opportunity to vastly expand our reach.

On this week show, we talk to the Lodi Winegrape Commission’s Executive Director, Stuart Spencer. If there was ever a wine region that should be on everyone's radar but isn't, it's Lodi. Lodi is a massive region providing grapes to winemakers in many other regions. Even though you may not know it, there's a better than good chance that you have enjoyed Lodi wines without knowing it, for a very long time. What's this about? Next, we move on to the region of Clarksburg, California, and joining us is the Executive Director of the Clarksburg Wine Growers and Vintners Association, Tom Merwin.

This is a truly awesome region that is nestled in the Sacramento River Delta, where you can spend days, if not weeks, if not months, roaming around the area by house boat without ever seeing much of any sign of civilization What you can do is park alongside a levy, climb up the embankment and visit a wide variety of amazing wineries that are definitely off your radar, but incredibly wonderful.

Finally, on today's show, Tony Corrallo of Trium Wines tells us how he went from becoming a wine club member to the winery owner. Also joining Tony is Jacob Colmenero of the Asante Foundation. He's the Development Officer of this organization, which puts on one of the finest wine events in America; The Oregon Wine Experience. Grape Encounters will be at the Oregon Wine Experience in late August, and you should join us there! Learn more about this amazing event and the incredible good that it does for children with health issues in their part of the country. They are not the only ones that use wine as a way to benefit people in need, but this is certainly one of the great events that shows just how much good can be done with a bottle of wine.

The Supreme Court just handed down a landmark decision when it comes to changes in wine retail laws and wine shipping. It's all great news for wine consumers, but it's also very complicated and Tom does a great job of making the information more understandable to the general public.

The conversation moves on to what wine consumers really want. Tom has got some incredible insights into this particular topic and you won't want to miss what he has to say.

The conversation ends with a very important discussion on millennials. For a long time now, the wine industry has seen this demographic group as the most important area of focus when it comes to marketing, but is that really true? In reality, we're beginning to learn that other demographic groups are being neglected at the expense of millennials who are not quite convinced as of yet that wine is their thing. Hear Tom's insights into this subject and more on this week's edition of Grape Encounters Radio.

There's been a lot to talk about in the news in the past couple of weeks and we need to get you caught up. Grape Encounters Announcer Brentanamo joins David in the studio to banter about some of the hottest topics of the day, including Vladimir Putin's wine estate in Spain and the storage of his massive wine collection in Moldovan Caves.

Next up is wine competitions and wine judging, including the important things that you really need to know.

Then, the wines served in first class and even economy on airlines. It's not all bad news and you shouldn't resist the temptation to purchase a bottle or two when you're heading from Point A to Point B.

Finally, the relationship between wine and personality, it's much more significant than you think, and you'll be very surprised to learn that your personality speaks volumes about your preferences in wine. Yeah.

Why Wine Rules Were Meant to be Broken, Featuring the First US Master of Wine, Tim Hani

This is an encore presentation of a show that we ran a few months ago. We felt that it was important to rerun it because a number of people told us that they didn't get a chance to hear it, and Tim's comments on wine rules and how much we've got it wrong are epic. Please take a little while to listen to this show. It will change everything that you think about wine and wine pairing.

David is on with Tim Hanni, Master of Wine, someone who has been making headlines throughout his career and especially recently with his maverick ideas and opinions on wine and the industry's inherent fallacies about wine tastes and wine & food pairings. Tim has a great book out, Why You Like the Wines You Like: Changing the way the world thinks about wine. Check out this great interview full of sensory enlightenment.

Tim is also a Wine Educator, and has a new course available about really understanding the wine business, check it out here.

This is an eye-opening episode that you won’t want to miss. One of the trends that David and Wes address include the shattering of rules related to wine pairing. Even some of the world’s most renowned Somms are questioning conventional wisdom.

Also, there’s a growing affection toward Riesling that is really taking hold. When was the last time that you had one? Another major trend is the migration of wine drinkers toward rosé wines. If you think they’re strictly sweet wines, you’ve been hanging around White Zinfandel too long. Other topics include Orange Wine, Cabernet Franc and much more! This edition of Grape Encounters is brought to you by Total Wine and More.

On this show, David and his announcer make a plea to wine enthusiasts to just set aside the pretentiousness and simply have a good time.

What should those of us who are enthusiastic about wine call ourselves? David and Brentanamo explore some possibilities that might just help to bring things down to earth, one of which is simply having a great time in the tasting room without getting too hung up on those sometimes-annoying tasting notes.

Okay, so here's a really off-the-wall episode of Grape Encounters Radio. What happens when the lead singer of a leading Celtic Rock group meets up with Grape Encounters host David Wilson? Well, you'll hear the answer in episode 510 of Grape Encounters Radio.

Keith Roberts is the lead singer of the Young Dubliners, perhaps the world’s most popular group in this genre, and he has lots of insights when it comes to being on the road and enjoying America's favorite adult beverage. The first half of this show is a real hoot and you will find Keith's personality infectious.

In the second half of the show, join David at Hakone Estate and Gardens in Saratoga, California. When people come to Saratoga to enjoy this wonderful wine region, one of the places that they almost always stop is Hakone Estate and Gardens. On today's episode, David is joined by Executive Director Shozo Kagoshima. They tour the garden and talk about why it's a perfect fit with the astonishing local wine community.

Today’s episode of Grape Encounters comes to you from California’s State Capitol, Sacramento. Best known as the Golden State’s government seat, this northern California city is becoming equally well known as a food and wine lover’s paradise, and there’s probably no better example of delectable dining than Mulvaney’s B and L, owned and operated by its namesake, Patrick Mulvaney.

Patrick Mulvaney, Proprietor and Chef at Mulvaney's B and L in Sacramento

10 years ago Mayor Kevin Johnson suggested to Patrick that Sacramento should call itself “The Farm-to-Fork Capitol.” Initially, Patrick wasn’t in love with the suggestion. Today, however, he’s not only embraced the title but is widely considered to be the leader of a movement that has put Mulvaney’s and Sacramento in the culinary limelight. The show begins with a delightful one-on-one in Mulvaney’s wine cellar.

Mike Heringer, Winemaker at Heringer Estates in Clarksburg, CA
In the second half of the show, David heads out to the Sacramento River Delta, a massive network of rivers and slews. It's water-based recreation on steroids here. But what a lot of people don't know is that when you dock your boat and climb up the embankment, you’re likely to discover some really terrific wineries that have been fairly low-profile for a very long time. These days, however, wineries in this region are really making a name for themselves. One such place is Heringer Estate, a family farm that has been operating for several generations. Joining David is the winemaker and co-owner Mike Heringer. This is one very beautiful place, rich with history and turning out a very broad selection of wines!

Last year they had record breaking representation from across the state with more than 100 Oregon wineries participating, providing the perfect opportunity for guests to take in the vastness of our state’s excellent wine. In 2018, Oregon Wine Experience® raised more than $1.3 Million and 100% of those proceeds went to Children’s Miracle Network and other Asante healthcare programs. Find out more here.

David with Hilda Jones of Abacela Winery

Abacela Winery
Next, from a visit on our Oregon Grape Encounters Mighway WineChaser Tour, David talks with Hilda Jones of Abacela Vineyards and Winery in Roseburg, Oregon. Abacela is a world-class, multi-award winning winery and viticulture success story. But in 1995 when founders Earl and Hilda Jones planted its first vines they had no way of knowing what the outcome would be. They were scientists with zero winemaking experience who left secure careers and trekked 2700 miles west, kids in tow, to test a hypothesis.

Abacela was an experiment they hoped would answer a question that had puzzled them for years: Why doesn't America produce any fine varietal Tempranillo wine? Earl and Hilda probably weren't the first enophiles to wonder why the great grape of Spain's famous Rioja wines was mysteriously absent from American fine wine. However they were the first to approach the question with scientific rigor, form a hypothesis, then devote their lives to testing it. This is the story of how one ordinary family's curiosity and determination transformed their lives, built one of Oregon's best-loved wineries and influenced winegrowing not only in Oregon and the Pacific Northwest but across America. Learn more about Abacela's award-winning wines here, and plan a visit to beautiful Southern Orgeon wine country!

Dancin Vineyards
Finally, a stop at Dancin Vineyard (2017 Oregon Winery of the Year) and an interview with Dan Marca, proprietor along with with his wife Cindy, of a meticulous and lovely tasting room experience in Medford, Oregon. During our visit we were treated to many culinary creations, their tasting room boasts a full kitchen and pizza oven that perfectly complements their award-winning wines. It's a lovely spot, and a must-visit stop on your Southern Orgeon travels! Find out more about Dancin Vineyard here.

David talks with Winemaker Adam LaZarre, who has a long and storied career in the wine industry. His accomplishments are too many to mention, but in addition to the wines he has made for many large brands (Rex Goliath, Cycles Gladiator, Hahn Estates, he and his wife Angie have been making their own wines for many years under the name LaZarre Wines.
The brand was started in 2003 primarily as a high-end, single-vineyard Pinot Noir project and has grown to include such varietals as Merlot, Albariño, Sauvignon Blanc, Vin Gris, and Chardonnay.
Through many of their contacts developed over the decades working for various wine companies, Adam and Angie have created relationships with a number of great growers on the Central Coast of California from which they source their fruit. These vineyards range from Pine Canyon deep in the hills of western Monterey County down to the Santa Ynez Valley and Santa Rita Hills of Santa Barbara County. In between are Paso Robles and Edna Valley, two other sources of grapes for the portfolio. These wines are limited in their production and are really the best offerings the LaZarres can deliver in any particular vintage. They are completely committed to providing the very best possible wines at any price and will continue to do so until they depart the earth. After all, wine is a gift from God and should be enjoyed responsibly or at least naked…

David talks about Dr. Laura Catena, Managing Director and Catena Institute of Wine Founder and Board, about Catena Wines and her family's play...

It all began with the label. "For most wineries, labels are just marketing tools designed to quickly catch the eye from a store shelf," says Dr. Laura Catena, Managing Director of Argentina's Catena Zapata. "But we had a different idea: Why not create a label that delves deeper and dramatizes the incredible cultural story behind Malbec's migration from Europe to the Americas?"

The result was so compelling that on Tuesday, May 22nd, 2018, the Drinks Business Awards presented first place to the new label in their Best Design & Packaging for Wine category. The international panel of judges assembled by the U.K.-based wine and spirits publication recognized the label's combination of innovation, depth, and visual impact at a ceremony held at the London Wine Fair.

It took more than a year to create that original artwork for the Catena Zapata Malbec Argentino 2015, a collectible release that makes its U.S. debut in May and tells the story of the grape through four allegorical female figures. The label artwork also inspired Dr. Catena to create a four-act play with her brother-in-law, playwright Gustavo Ballejo. In the performance, Dr. Catena herself brings the four figures from the label to life. The theatrical piece debuted May 7 to an audience of trade and media at Balvanera, an Argentine restaurant in New York's Lower East Side. A second performance occurred during the Nantucket Wine & Food Festival on May 18 with others scheduled throughout the year at events around the world. Then, four days later on May 22, the label won the Drinks Business Award.

Dr. Catena said of the honor: "The Malbec Argentino label tells the story of humanity, of women, of migration, and of natural disasters; this award is an acknowledgment of wine as a historical beverage."

For her performance, Dr. Catena fleshed out the roles of all four of the characters depicted on the label: Eleanor of Aquitaine, the 12th century monarch and Malbec's first champion; the character "Madame Phylloxera," representing the voracious female aphid that was the scourge of Bordeaux in the 1850s; the Italian immigrant Ana Mosceta, who is Catena's own great-grandmother and represents those who brought the first Malbec cuttings to the Americas; and finally Adrianna Catena, who was at the side of her father, Nicolás Catena, as he established the grape variety as a treasure of the New World.

The original label drawing is by the Connecticut-based artist Rick Shaefer, who is known for large-scale works rendered in charcoal that combine the sublime with the macabre. Working with the Catena sisters and with Stranger & Stranger, a wine-focused packaging and design firm, Shaefer created finely detailed drawings that bring to mind Rembrandt's late-Gothic etchings. The label design of the Malbec Argentino 2015—a premium, 100-percent Malbec release crafted from two of the family's high altitude vineyards in Mendoza—is dense and layered, and is a radical departure from images used by Catena Zapata in the past. It is also the first time that the historical arc of a grape variety has been so graphically integrated into a wine label.

The grapes in the wine come from two hand-harvested, high altitude vineyards in the Valle del Uco: Angelica at 3,018 feet and Nicasia at 3,593 feet. Low yields and 24 months of aging in French barriques result in a full-bodied, intense and deeply hued wine that drinks well upon release but will also reward cellaring for another 10 to 20 years.

The SRP for the Catena Zapata Malbec Argentino 2015 is $140 and the wine is now available nationally thro...]]>

While working at one of California’s largest wineries in the late ‘90s, Quality Wine Barrels founder Roger Burson saw a need for obtaining reasonably priced high quality used wine barrels from trustworthy sources. With few options available apart from calling local wineries to check for culled barrels, Roger decided to create something new in the wine industry: a used wine barrel exchange. Over the years they expanded on this concept to offer good quality re-fillable barrels as well as racks to wineries, breweries and distilleries across the United States as well as other countries.

Their barrel recycling program has grown in recent years to include barrels that are no longer suitable for re-fill. These retired barrels are given new life in the hands of furniture makers, Pinterest hobbyists, and to weekend gardeners as well as nurseries for use as planters. Find out more at their website!

Next, David talks orange wine with Mike Kirkpatrick, co-winemaker along with his son David, of Ruby Cellars wines, based in Atascadero, CA. Orange wine is growing in availability, and is made by leaving white grape juice with its skins to extract flavor, color and tannins. Ruby Cellars’ Orange Viognier is an award-winning wine, very different from their regular Viognier. Find out more about this unique wine and terrific winemaker family here.

David talks with Josh Phelps of the Grounded Wine Company in Paso Robles, makes of the new wine "Public Radio." Grounded Wine Co. is the personal brand of Napa native Josh Phelps, built to reflect his experience growing up in wine country, and his relationships in the wine community. A grassroots, all-American, wine label, the wines feature grapes from trusted, sustainable vineyards in California and Washington and showcase what it means to be a winemaker today.

Josh's roots run deep, raised in a winemaking family, he was exposed to the industry from a young age. He continued to build his knowledge of the business through college, selling wine, working harvests, and creating wine for friends with his father, Chris Phelps. With GWCo., Josh hopes to build on this legacy and make his own splash in the wine world while exposing wine drinkers of his own generation to his hometown in wine country. Working with trusted farmers and childhood friends, his company reflects his deep understanding of wine, one that can only be developed growing up around the vines. Find out more about GWCo here: https://www.groundedwineco.com/

David closes with a story about a young woman he met, fallen on hard times, with an appreciation of art & culture, who fell in love with the Artevino wine bottle label. Her story makes us appreciate our good fortune in living a life filled with good health, family and friends and good wine and food. Wishing you all a very grateful and Happy New Year!

David talks with Kevin Lund, author of the book Conversation Marketing, How to Be Relevant and Engage Your Customer by Talking Human, about the language of wine marketing and selling directly to consumers.

Each of us sees more than 5,000 marketing messages every day. In such a crowded marketplace, brands are scrambling to find new ways to cut through the clutter to reach consumers. With such intense competition, it's critical to stand apart beyond service and price. With the complexities of wine, customers may be more confused than ever, and it's so important to give real information, not a hard sell of fancy tasting note references and hyperbole.

Conversation Marketing will help you connect your brands, not just to the minds of your consumers, but to their hearts. Slick slogans and catchy ads may still work in some instances, but today's discerning consumers demand more. They want information and a reason to connect with a brand before they act. They want a conversation.

Find out more about Kevin's work here.

Ruby Cellars' Orange Viognier is an award-winning wine, very different from their regular Viognier. Find out more about this unique wine and terrific winemaker family here.

http://grapeencounters.com/episode-462-vino-argentino-and-the-wine-lovers-apprentice/feed/ 0 David talks about a book written by Laura Catena, a fourth-generation winemaker in the Uco Valley, Argentina. The book is Vino Argentino: An Insider's Guide to the Wines and Wine Country of Argentina, and in this book part-wine-primer,
Dr. Catena is also acting in a 4-act play based on the striking artwork created for the Catena Zapata wines (which won the 2018 Drinks Business Award for Best Design & Packaging), Dr. Catena was inspired to create an original theatrical production exploring the global history of the Malbec grape.

It all began with the label. "For most wineries, labels are just marketing tools designed to quickly catch the eye from a store shelf," says Dr. Laura Catena, Managing Director of Argentina's Catena Zapata. "But we had a different idea: Why not create a label that delves deeper and dramatizes the incredible cultural story behind Malbec's migration from Europe to the Americas?" Dr. Catena said of the honor: "The Malbec Argentino label tells the story of humanity, of women, of migration, and of natural disasters; this award is an acknowledgment of wine as a historical beverage." Learn more about the project here.

Next, David talks with Kathleen Bershad, author of the new book, The Wine Lover's Apprentice: Words of Wisdom for Would-Be Oenophiles. In The Wine Lover's Apprentice, Bershad acknowledges the importance of tossing out the rules about wine and taking a relaxed approach to storing and serving everyday bottles.

Readers will learn tricks of the trade and strategies for navigating the shelves of a retail store or ordering wine at a restaurant. The Wine Lover's Apprentice delves into the nitty-gritty details of winemaking and takes a look at the world’s major wine regions. Written in short bites, readers will easily gain a quick understanding of an area’s major grapes, the style or styles of wine, and the appellations that offer the best quality wine (or the best value). The Wine Lover's Apprentice unravels the terms you see when reading a wine review, looking at a bottle, or listening to a wine geek talk vino. By the end of this helpful guide, readers will become empowered to know what’s in a bottle, be able to make an educated guess about its flavors, and help change the culture to make drinking wine what it should be―relaxing and fun. You can find the book here.

Peake Ranch winery and tasting room will be opening this summer!

Next, in an uncanny story of how life comes full circle, David visits with one of his oldest friends, John Wagner of the new Peake Ranch winery. Having gone to first grade togther, David and John both had entirely different careers through their adult life, but both are now connected through the wine industry. John is in the process of building the brand new Peake Ranch winemaking facility and tasting room on the original Richard Sanford property in Buellton, CA (in the Santa Ynez wine region, and featured in the movie Sideways). He's been making wine from Santa Maria fruit for a few years and is making some very tasty wines! We look forward to their grand opening later this year! For more information, please visit their website.

Last, our first ever listener call-in from the great state of Kansas, regarding why are there very few wine choices in his state. Listen to find out more!

Continuing the exploration of Bordeaux, David visits with Bruno Mottet, Executive Director of Chateau la France, a beautiful chateau with vineyards, a bed & breakfast and a 20-meter stainless steel rooster who watches over the grapes.

An estate of great name since the XVIIth century, Château La France is one of the largest estates in the Bordeaux region, boasting 90 hectares (222 acres) in a single block. 68 hectares of the 78 under production are classified AOC Bordeaux Supérieur rouge (red) and the remaining 10 hectares AOC Bordeaux Blanc Sec (dry white).

Chateau la France

Its rolling vineyards lie all round giving beautiful views and sense of privacy. The property is open for visits throughout the year and are free with wine aroma workshops included. What is unique is that you can rent the château in its entirety with private swimming pool (12 people for around 3000€ per week). Your own keys to your own château! Owner Bruno Mottet admits that his reason for developing wine tourism is to help build customer loyalty for his wines rather than to particularly create revenue.

Sophie Blot, Sales Director at Chateau Leroy-Beauval

Next, David chats with Sophie Blot, Sales Director at Chateau Leroy-Beauval, which has its roots in the 13th century, and has undergone a state-of-the-art renovation with the current owners, Stéphanie and Alexandre Leroy.
From this well recognized terroir there are a range of 8 wines produced, from Bordeaux red to rose, thereby including a dry white and two sparkling wines dearingly named Marquise, the owners would like to stress, this range of sparkling wines are delicately feminine who have gained a strong reputation on the French market and distinguished themselves with classicism Bordelaise.
While at Chateau Leroy-Beauval, David and his group enjoy a very special caviar tasting from the third largest producer in the world, Sturvia. It was delicious enough to make a David a caviar convert!

On this week’s Grape Encounters, meet Charn Rai, the inventor of a device that host David Wilson says is a “landmark innovation.” (Interview starts at 18:30 in the podcast.) This brand-new wine aeration product is a game-changer… just as the Coravin was a few years back. After putting it through its paces, David says, “It’s beautiful, mesmerizing, and destined to revolutionize conventional decanting in a matter of months.”

Charn shares the process of developing the V-Spin; a gorgeous decanter that sits on a simple stand. Inside the stand is some very innovative magnetic technology which enables the wine in the decanter to swirl silently—creating a vortex that exposes the wine to air in just a few minutes. The V-Spin does what otherwise could take hours… and you can adjust the speed and time to perfectly suit the wine varietal. Find out more at: https://vspin.us/

Bob Sweeney, co-creator of the Boutiques Wine Sampler Box

Also on the show is Bob Sweeney, co-creator along with Tim Jones, of The Boutique Wine Sampler Box, a California Central Coast entrepreneur who has come up with a new take on wine tasting. You’d think you would see this done all over the world, but frankly, it seems few have taken the time to pull the pieces together.

What Bob did was negotiate contracts with several of the top premium wine producers in the Paso Robles region of California. Six of Paso’s finest were repacked into 375ml bottles; three healthy pours in each bottle. The result is the ability to enjoy a true cross-section of what the region has to offer. Make no mistake, these are outstanding wines and David wanted to showcase this very special project to encourage other regions to show off their very best in the same way! It's one of the issues of Wine Enthusiast Magazine that Grape Encounters host David Wilson waits for each year with greatest anticipation. Hey, there are a lot of ways to enjoy wine, but the best way is to enjoy it in a region that is truly winecentric. Each year, Wine Enthusiast chooses ten destinations that are all about maximum wine enjoyment and, this year, there are some very big surprises on that list. Perhaps the biggest for David is the San Luis Obispo Coast, which is home to the Grape Encounters Radio studio. David says, "I knew we were making the right choice when me moved the studio here four years!"

Matt Kettmann, Contributing Editor, Wine Enthusiast

Joining David on the show are two of Wine Enthusiast's finest. First up is Executive Editor Susan Kostrzewa, who's passion and charm make the conversation unforgettable. She gives a run-down of the entire list. Then, Contributing Editor Matt Kettmann, who covers the Central Coast and San Luis Obispo County beat, zeroes in on all the things that make David's home turf such an exceptional wine travel choice. Don't miss David needling Matt as to why the Grape Encounters Empourium wine bar wasn't mentioned. Okay, Matt does have a valid explantion! It's a must-not-miss episode of Grape Encounters!

It wasn’t that long ago that Grape Encounters host David Wilson would cringe at the idea of putting fine wine in a can, in fact, there are many past episodes of Grape Encounters where David literally rants about the thought of doing such a vile thing. Well, sometimes it takes a respected colleague to get us to revise deep-seated beliefs. And who would imagine it would be the Winemaker of Cycles Gladiator?

On today’s show, winemaker Adam LaZarre, someone who David idolizes, presents his iconic brand, Cycles Gladiator, to David in a CAN. Adam is Head Winemaker for Wine Hooligans, a group who owns numerous artisan CA wine brands, and they now own Cycles Gladiator, for which Adam was the original winemaker that brought them success internationally. This wine brand made winemaker LaZarre famous around the world, so how would fans of the wine and the host of Grape Encounters react to such a daring and potentially blasphemous move? Well, I guess you’ll have to listen to get that answer! You can find out more at: cyclesgladiator.com or winehooligans.com.

Next, David talks with Trip Middleton of Boxxle.... about their new product which changes the way that you can enjoy your wine in a much longer time span... Box wine has come a long way since it was originally introduced and you can now find some pretty amazing wine in a box. And it just keeps getting better — each year, more vintners introduce box wines to their collection. Why? Because like us, they appreciate the box’s benefits — it keeps their product fresh, packs some incredible environmental benefits, and lets us all pay for the wine, not the bottle.
With Boxxle, you still purchase your favorite 3 liter Bag-in-Box wines or try a new one, bring the wine home and place the interior bladder into Boxxle. Boxxle raises the wine up, allowing the spigot to be above your glass, and automatically compresses the bag so you get the most from your favorite wines, all in an attractive countertop dispenser. If you think Napa Valley Wines are amazing, you should see how the vintners of America’s premiere wine region party! The term “Napa Style” can often be heard in conjunction with entertaining, decorating and even dressing in a way that reflects the nature of the legendary valley.

Blakesley Chappellet, author of Napa Valley Entertaining

But just what is Napa style? Stuffy and pretentious? Not a bit! In actuality, it can run the gambit from re-purposing wine country relics to glitzy affairs that never upstage the valley’s farming heritage. Well, at least that’s David’s impression of doing thing the Napa way. However, David always prefers to defer to the experts, and who better to ask than Blakesley Chappellet, author of the brand new book, “Napa Valley Entertaining.” After all, Blakesley is a member of one of Napa’s pioneering families, the Chappellets, who were featured on the last episode of Grape Encounters.

Napa Valley EntertainingJoin David for an hour-long conversation with Blakesley Chappellet, as she discusses her book which offers an intimate profile in words and pictures of what it’s like to attend social affairs with 28 winemaking families in the Napa Valley.

This is your personal, VIP invitation to get a first glimpse at Napa Valley Entertaining!

]]>
http://grapeencounters.com/episode-428-vinome/feed/ 0 What if your DNA could guide you to the perfect wine. This week, a team of developers and DNA experts take David on a deep dive into this fascinating new science. Being careful about what he endorses, David agrees to be a Guinea Pig! Stay tuned!
Genome - vinome? Grape Encounters host David Wilson has long insisted that our taste in wine is no simple accident. For years, David has been noting the relationship between things we love (and hate) in our everyday world and our preferences in wine. David frequently asks listeners to tell him their preferences in music, film, colors and even foods. After asking between 12 and 20 questions, David chooses a wine for the participant based on years of observation. The result? An uncanny track record of choosing wines perfectly. By the way, David NEVER asks any questions whatsoever about the subjects’ wine preferences.

Vinome's Kit to sample your DNA

So, imagine how excited David was to learn that a company called “Vinome” created by a team of genetic scientists and wine experts is now using DNA insights, the science of taste, smell and taste preference information to pair wine lovers and wine discoverers with wines they love. All it takes is a tiny DNA sample swabbed from inside the mouth. Once the results are obtained, you can use it to guide future wine buying purchases or shop for hard-to-find boutique bottles at Vinome's online Marketplace. Vinome also has a very unique online quarterly wine club. Either way, Vinome delivers direct to your doorstep. Promoting the American artisan winemakers, Vinome has piqued the interest of the wine industry since its launch in late July.

David talks with co-founders Ron Andrews, Sara Riordan and Shannon Kieran about Vinome, one of the first companies to apply the science of taste and the vast body of genetic research to a new and broadly accessible experience – a groundbreaking connection between a person's DNA and lifestyle. The personalized wine service, available exclusively on Helix.com, an online marketplace of DNA-powered products, analyzes the nuances of taste preferences, along with 10 genetic markers related to smell and taste to identify eight unique Vinome taste profiles that are uniquely yours. Vinome’s team of founders and developers dig deep into the show which ends with the Vinome team challenging David to be a test subject. Who’s would turn down an offer like that?

Today, things are changing again. As more and more important steps are being taken by wine producers and cork manufacturers to assure wines are not compromised. On today’s edition of Grape Encounters, David invites Peter Weber, President of the Cork Quality Council, based in California, to share information on what is being done to regain the confidence of the wine industry which had grown tired of having wines returned that were ruined by the dreaded cork taint. Additionally, Peter’s organization and others have determined through extensive research that cork are not the thing that can cause a bottle to be compromised.

There are also environmental issues that make for some interesting conversation. More usage of cork contributes significantly to the forests’ preservation as well as communities and habitats of thousands of plants and animals including the endangered Iberian Lynx of which there are only a couple of hundred left in the world!

You’ll learn a great deal about all things cork on this edition of Grape Encounters featuring the Cork Quality Council’s Peter Weber, including; Why screwcaps are not the most effective closure due to a lack of some beneficial oxidation. You’ll also learn why the Aussies who literally led the charge to screw-open Shiraz and capped Cabernet are now closing their China-bound wines with natural cork. Plus, where cork is grow, how stoppers are made and why rare animals and fragile habits thrive thanks to the cork trees.

Just a reminder, it is inappropriate to listen to this edition of Grape Encounter while drinking a wine sealed with a natural cork.

First up is Zac Robinson of Husch Vineyards. Husch was founded in 1971 and is the oldest winery in the Valley.
Zac Robinson of Husch Vineyards

In 1979, Hugo Oswald Jr. bought the 6,000 case Husch Winery from the Husch family and today Husch Vineyards remains owned and operated by the 3rd Generation of the Oswald family: Zac Robinson and Amanda Robinson Holstine. Through the years Husch has modernized and expanded, but it has never lost its initial rustic charm or reputation for great wines.

The second half of the show features Kristy Charles of Foursight Wines; the first winery in the country to put “Vegan” on their label. Foursight Wines is also located in the breathtaking Anderson Valley.

Kristy Charles of Foursight Wines

Foursight Wines was founded in 2006 by Kristy Charles, Joe Webb and Bill & Nancy Charles. Their goal is to produce 100% estate wines in the French monopole model, with grapes sourced only from their Charles Vineyard. Every grape and bottle of wine produced in their vineyard or small winery has been shepherded through the process by a member of the family, making the final product they sell direct through their wine club, website or tasting room all that much more special. Foursight Wines is one of the many prestigious labels featured at Winesong 2017.

Tony is the winemaker at Panther Creek Cellars which was founded by famed negociant Ken Wright in the 1980s with some of the most iconic single vineyard wines. Panther Creek produced the first Oregon wine to get a Parker 94 for their 1994 Shae vineyard.

Tony also has his own winery, Tendril Wine Cellars in the Willamette Valley which is open by appointment only. As most listeners know, Pinot Noir is not host David Wilson’s go-to wine, but David’s opinion of Pinot went up several notches after tasting Tendril’s offerings. If you think you know Pinot, you definitely want to give this a listen because Tony Rynders has truly reimagined one of the world’s most favorite wines. It’s an achievement that most winemakers only dream of… earning a perfect 100 point score from legendary wine critic Robert Parker. Yes indeed, it’s nearly impossible to earn even one 100 point score during your career. But Mark Carter of Carter Cellars and Envy Wines has lots of years ahead of him and he has already earned an incomparable five 100-point scores from Parker.
Mark and Sheri Carter

A personal friend of host David Wilson, Mark had only earned one perfect score when he and David first met. But in the past couple of years, Mark has earned four more perfect scores… which is no surprise to David, who calls Mark’s Coliseum Vineyard Merlot his single favorite wine. However, it wasn’t Merlot that earned Mark these amazing accolades. Mark has really raised the bar when it comes to Napa Cabernet Sauvignons… earning 3 perfect scores in just one year.
Mark and Sheri Carter

So just how much does a perfect score effect the popularity and price of a wine? And how tough is it for a winemaker to remain humble after being crowned an undisputed champion? You’ll find out on this edition of Grape Encounters Radio. Our show ends with an episode of Sippin’ With Sara Schneider, Wine Editor of Sunset Magazine. If you want to know what varietals to keep your eyes on as they rise to greater prominence among wine lovers, you’ll definitely want to stick with this episode to the very last drop!

There couldn’t have been a more picture perfect day to enjoy a long line-up of wines from Archery Summit GM and Winemaker Chris Mazepink. Archery Summit features Oregon’s only natural cave cellar and we assure you, the views underground are just as spectacular as the truly stunning view across the valley from Archery Summit’s patio. Chris Mazepink makes some of Oregon’s high-end, bigger, bolder Pinot Noirs from single vineyards along with Alsatian Pinot Gris and rosé. The winery was founded by the same folks who built legendary Pine Ridge Winery in Napa Valley back in the 90s.

There’s a lot to know about the wines of Oregon and Chris is just the person to walk you through the subject in a delightfully unpretentious way. Having worked exclusively with Oregon Pinot Noir over the years, Chris began his impressive career as Assistant Winemaker at Lemelson Vineyards. He spent four years at Shea Wine Cellars where he tripled case production and fine-tuned their blends. Chris then joined Oregon’s revered Benton Lane Winery as Director of Winemaking and Viticulture. With years of experience running a large estate devoted to ultra-premium Pinot Noir, Chris came to Archery Summit in 2013 anxious to expand its world-renowned wine program.

This stop was certainly a highlight during Grape Encounters’ trip to the Willamette and we’re delighted to bring you along!

Archery Summit features stunning views and Oregon’s only natural cave cellar. The Oregon wine odyssey continues from the Willamette Valley. In this episode, David visits Gran Moraine which is one of several brands owned and operated by Kendall-Jackson. Today’s special guest is winemaker and General Manager Eugenia Keegan who is truly a legend in the region. The winery was started from the ground up and is truly a special spot. Eugenia is now in her 19th year in Oregon wine country. Her resume spans 40 years and she was one of the very first female winemakers in the country. Like so many world class winemakers, her career began in California until a chance romance led her to Oregon in 2003. Eugenia has held many top positions during her four-plus decades in the wine business. She began her career with Joseph Swan Vineyards as a cellar/vineyard worker in 1976. That experience led her to numerous opportunities, including cellar intern positions in Burgundy at both the prestigious producer Pousse d’Or in Volnay and Etienne Sauzet in Puligny-Montrachet. Most significantly she took the position of Business Manager at Bouchaine Vineyards in Napa, California in 1982 during the early days of the winery’s start-up. She was later promoted to President and CEO. In January of 1996, she accepted the position of President at Vine Cliff Winery in Napa.

The planting of Gran Moraine was completed in 2005 and, in less than a dozen years, it became recognized as a leader in the production of world-class pinots grown from Dijon clones. If there was ever a more delightful and witty winemaker than Eugenia, we haven’t found him or her yet. But don’t take our word for it, just kick back and have a listen to one of our most delightful wine broadcasts!

Laurent Montalieu, Proprietor and Winemaker of Hyland Estates

This edition of Grape Encounters is the first in a long-anticipated month-long series recorded in the famed Willamette Valley wine of Northwest Oregon. It’s a place where you’ll find true winemaking pioneers who have no inclination to copy what their counterparts in other regions do. They are quick to point out that Oregon wines are best when they are allowed to express their sense of place… and to that end, this very special series begins at Highland Estates where David is joined by founding winemaker, Laurent Montalieu.

Laurent took his first steps in the vineyard in Medoc owned by his great grandfather. He grew up on the Caribbean island of Guadeloupe and returned to his family's homeland of Bordeaux for summer vacations and high school. It was through his family's deep commitment to the land that he learned to respect the vines and the wines they produced.

His interest in viticulture led him to the Institute of Oenology of Bordeaux, where he immersed himself in studies of vineyard management and winemaking. After graduating in 1987, he worked for Chateau La Tour Blanche near Sauternes, and Domaine Mumm in California's Napa Valley before moving to Oregon. In 1995, Laurent joined WillaKenzie as a partner and winemaker. WillaKenzie is also where he became something of a living legend.

Today, Laurent handcrafts the Soléna Estate and Hyland Estates wines while also serving as winemaker and co-founder of NW Wine Company, a state-of-the-art winemaking facility in nearby Dundee.

In the show’s second half, David is taken to the Hyland Vineyard, which was first planted in 1971. This magnificent property is located very much off the beaten path and is one of the most revered vineyards in the Pacific Northwest. Pretty much the only way you’re likely to find it is to have an “in the know” tour guide. In this case its Colin Eddy, the company’s National Sales Manager. Colin is an absolute encyclopedia of knowledge about the vineyard… but there’s even more expertise on the journey. David is thrilled to have Aaron Bartels of Southern Glazers Wine and Spirits join in on the conversation. Aaron spent many hours arranging many all of the vineyard visits and, quite frankly, this special series from Oregon would not have taken place were it not for Aaron. Thank you Aaron and major kudos for your awesome work!

If you think Napa Valley Wines are amazing, you should see how the vintners of America’s premiere wine region party! The term “Napa Style” can often be heard in conjunction with entertaining, decorating and even dressing in a way that reflects the nature of the legendary valley.

But just what is Napa style? Stuffy and pretentious? Not a bit! In actuality, it can run the gambit from repurposing wine country relics to glitzy affairs that never upstage the valley’s farming heritage.

Join David for an hour-long conversation with Blakesley Chappellet, as she discusses her book which offers an intimate profile in words and pictures of what it’s like to attend social affairs with 28 winemaking families in the Napa Valley.

In a very special edition of Grape Encounters Radio, Host David Wilson spends a few very special days at the home of the Chappellet Family in California’s Napa Valley. This family interview is significant for two reasons. First, Chappellet family members are commemorating a very important milestone; the 50 year anniversary of a family-operated winery that played an important role in the establishment of the Napa Valley as a world-class wine reason. But more importantly, the interview with family members takes place exactly one year to the day after the passing of Winery co-founder Donn Chappellet.

Joining David for this insightful retrospective AND peak down the road are Donn’s wife and co-founder Molly along with children Cyril, Carissa and Alexa. As family members share their thoughts and memories on a patio overlooking this breathtaking vineyard, you can hear the bells and flute music that echoed throughout the valley below Pritchard Hill the day Donn passed the reigns to his family; entrusting them to make sure the legendary brand and property flourishes for many generations to come. Winemaker Christian Roguenant

On this occasion, as they sip a variety of wines in the vineyard, David poses a question to Christian that can be and is the subject of much debate in the wine industry; “What’s on the verge of being the next big wine varietal trend.” That is the question… but if you want to know the answer, you’ll have hit play. But don’t worry… you won’t be disappointed by the answer(s). In fact, chances are, you’ll start sipping some wines that you have likely overlooked. Beyond that, there is just so much great information to consume here, including the answer to the question that keeps so many wine lovers up all night, “Where did the Chardonnay grape come from?” Intrigued? Give a listen. You’ll have tons of fun!
