Episode #732 – London Food and Wine Deserves More Love!

Welcome to another edition of Grape Encounters as we focus some well-deserved attention on thew London food scene.  As always, we’re here to share the intriguing adventures, unique personalities, and latest news in the world of wine with host, David Wilson, as your guide.

This week’s focus is on a city that is often overlooked but deserves recognition for its culinary excellence: London. This magnificent city is a melting pot of ethnic cuisines and an outstanding wine scene as well. From extensive restaurant wine lists to a vast selection of fabulous bottle shops and wine bars, London truly has something for every wine enthusiast.

And who better to guide us through this gastronomic journey than our special guest, Valerio Cosanni? Valerio is a highly respected sommelier deeply rooted in the London food and wine scene.  Today, he will provide us with his unique insights and experiences.

In an interview conducted via Zoom, Valerio shared some fascinating observations about London’s dynamic food scene. “Here in London, international visitors are everywhere, so it’s only natural that the food scene evolves to cater to a variety of palates. We’re witnessing a lot of fusion cuisine,” he said.  Valerio also highlighted the steadfastness of traditional British cuisine amidst the culinary diversity. “The oldest British restaurants still stick to their menu made with pies, really nice cuts of beef, and other products that come from the country. You can find just about anything you can think of in London.”

The conversation took an interesting turn when Valerio mentioned an emerging trend. “Over the past few years, we’ve seen the introduction of insects into the market. A few restaurants have started serving dishes like cricket. This trend actually began before the pandemic, but it gained momentum during lockdowns as people experimented with cooking at home.”
